JAGUARS – BUT NOT LYONS’

In this feature, I am focusing on the efforts of those who tried to improve on the work of Sir William Lyons, Jaguar’s master stylist. Some have succeeded, but many didn’t!

Their efforts down the years make for an unusual side-line to any Jaguar automobilia collection and here I present a general over-view of the theme, while highlighting sub-themes that can be explored further in their own right.

I’ve deliberately chosen a variety of examples of the sort of items that might interest the automobilia collector. I’ve majored on literature and photographs as they are the easiest to acquire. Others include models, badges and a ‘collectors’ card’ aimed at schoolboys in the States.

So much for the ‘How’ of automobilia collecting. For the ‘What’, the emphasis is on bodywork variants mounted on Jaguar mechanicals. Sports cars are glammed up
