Windows of all shapes, sizes and styles have been formed using wrought iron and, more recently, cast iron, steel and bronze. In the 1920s, steel windows became fashionable as the availability of standard window sections and mass production was coupled with contemporary design. The strength of steel means that a window’s glazing bars can be slim, allowing in maximum light and enabling the use of large expanses of glass. The downside of old metal windows, however, is that they can be cold and draughty, especially if poorly maintained.
