ON THE ROAD

IT’S RUBBISH! Once upon a time, so this story starts, two four-wheel-drives’ worth of us headed up 90 Mile Beach for some gritty camping. Despite it being a beach, 90 Mile is also a designated highway, and while it doesn’t carry the traffic of Auckland’s motorway system it’s still surprisingly busy.

We found a spot, a shallow depression tucked away behind a couple of sand hills for privacy. The problem was the place was almost ankle deep in stuff. Detritus. Garbage. Rubbish.
