Nanny of the Maroons

Ghanaian, c.1686 – c.1733

Nanny of the Maroons is believed to have originally come from the Gold Coast (now Ghana) and was possibly taken to Jamaica as a slave. She led a group of formerly enslaved people – the Windward Maroons who had sought refuge in the Jamaican mountains – in a guerilla war against the British. Her tactical prowess meant the British eventually had to sign a peace treaty with the Maroons as they couldn't defeat them.
