I’ve always worked in design in some capacity, and my career to date has been a journey about finding the right scale to work within. I started out in fashion and textile design where a piece of clothing was small enough to be able to engage with the material and construct myself. I then scaled up and studied interior architecture where I mostly worked on large scale commercial projects from 2015 onwards.
I learnt much about structure, design and manufacturing but felt the disconnect between the design and fabrication process was a missed opportunity – this led me to scale down and find an outlet where I could engage with the material and making process.
For me, furniture felt like the sweet spot which sat somewhere between the rigour and materiality of interior design and the smaller scale and physical interaction of fashion. I took part-time woodworking classes for years at the Victorian Woodworkers Association school before committing to furniture making and studying full-time at Sturt School for Wood in 2021.
