Skylarks have returned to Galloway. It’s always a seminal moment of spring and it falls with surprising reliability around 12 or 13 February. They’re not the first signs of change, but they are a signal moment in the changing year, and the little birds have an extraordinary ability to brighten an otherwise drab and lonely world.
