ONSCIOUS OF THE midwinter rationing of daylight, I had planned an early start. As luck would have it, not a mile from home the normal early morning flow of traffic ground to a halt. Penned in on either side by roadworks and traffic cones there was no escape, and I sat in frustration as the sky lightened incrementally and precious minutes, then hours of daylight slipped away. As I later discovered, half a mile or so further along the carriageway a lorry had spontaneously burst into flame. Thankfully, no-one was injured. Nevertheless, by the time the flames had been extinguished and the charred remains of the vehicle moved to one side, more than two hours had passed, and my early start had evaporated.
