MANY of us will recall starting our ridden careers on a trusty native. Known for their versatility and temperament, it would be safe to say Britain's native breeds are recognised and adored worldwide.

It's for these reasons part-breds are in such demand across the disciplines. Their much-loved native traits combined sometimes with a bit more blood or height, have become a time-tested combination for the ultimate competition animal, popular with all levels.

Professional dressage rider Katy Applin admits when it comes to horses her preference had always been “big, German and flashy”, but when she took on the ride on Debbie Hill's Welsh section D x Hanoverian Penstrumbly Abergwaun in 2019, her opinion soon changed.

Trained and competed by Debbie to prix st george, “Ginge” now competes at inter I with Katy. He is by Hanoverian stallion Abraham and out of Welsh mare Foxglen Brenhines, and when it comes to personality Katy says he definitely has a “wild dragon” side.
