You’ve heard the tales of the 1977 drawn VFL grand final; or the day Steve Waugh made his sensational last-ball century in the 2003 Ashes Test.
You know that only so many people were at the MCG or SCG on those famous days, but that doesn’t stop thousands more SAYING they were there.
Well one day, the February 22, 2015 might just become golf’s equivalent of those famous days … the day big-hitting Kiwi Ryan Fox won the Queensland PGA Championship.
Well, it was at the City Golf Club in South Toowoomba where Fox eagled the 16th and 17th holes in the final round to come from the clouds with a closing 62 to edge two blokes with whom you’re also probably familiar.
One was a skinny blond kid called Cameron Smith from Brisbane; the other was a quirky Canberra golfer named Matthew Millar, or “Rug” to his mates on account of his hairy chest.
Fox felt a tad guilty for having knocked o. the Aussie boys, particularly Millar who had led alone and looked the winner.
Recalled Millar: “Foxy phoned me after the presentation and actually apologised to me for the way he finished, which was good of him, even though he didn’t have to.
“Then we were over in New Zealand getting ready for the next tournament a couple of weeks later at Remuera and he came up me to in person and apologised again, saying he felt terrible still.
“I played well that week (the NZ PGA Championship) in strong winds and had my first four-round win and Foxy came up to me straight after to congratulate me and said: “Now I don’t give a f***” about Toowoomba.
