Scotland and slavery: history or fiction?

There are few historical subjects as big or as controversial in Scotland than the involvement of its citizens in African slavery. Since the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade in 2007, research and publication on this subject has increased. Individual case studies may not be typical, but the Slave Legacies database (www.ucl. ac.uk/lbs) provides statistical security, highlighting thousands of individuals who ‘owned’ Africans.
