Last month I dedicated the entire column to the Mastodon federated social network, which is seeing a massive influx of new users looking for an alternative to Twitter. As part of all that, I looked at how you could verify your identity without paying either £8 (Android) or £11 (for iPhone users) for the privilege, using the <a rel="me" href="Mastodon address">text</a> web or blog code insertion method.
But what if you wanted to verify that the Mastodon account is actually being operated by the same person as a Twitter account? The simple solution is to point to your Twitter profile in the Mastodon account profile meta section and include a clear link to your Mastodon account in your Twitter profile. While this works, and I do it myself, it does rely on people clicking through to check.
