Cape to Cape is arguably one of Australia’s best-known stage races, attracting huge fields, visiting epic locations and delivering the hype to suit. It’s situated in Western Australia’s picturesque Margaret River region and attracts over 1000 riders. It holds the title for one of Australia’s longest and largest-running multi-stage races, with the first edition going back to 2008.
I first attended this event in 2019, spontaneously pairing up with my road cycling teammate, Lucy Bechtel. I had freshly unboxed an S-Works Epic the week before, pretty much Googled “how to mtb”, and off we went to see what the infamous Cape to Cape was all about. We were complete dirt rookies and despite running close to 40 PSI in our tyres we survived the event, leaving us with memories to last us a lifetime, and it opened our eyes to what this event had to offer. It really was that good.
In 2020, the world went mad, and Western Australia was partitioned off from the east coast of Australia for almost two years. They say distance (or time?) makes the heart grow fonder, and returning to the Cape to Cape in 2022 exceeded all expectations.
