Five years ago, Monster Hunter: World finally brought Capcom’s long-running series kicking and roaring into the modern PlayStation age, and its newfound popularity showed other loot-driven multiplayer-based action RPGs how it’s done. That we haven’t had a brand-new followup since – this is a belated port of a Switch game – might be disappointing for some. However, we reckon this is the next monstrous evolution.

It might not look it at first glance, though. Monster Hunter Rise lacks World’s photorealistic detail even though it’s made in the fantastically versatile RE Engine. Instead, it breaks new ground in terms of how you play,
