A long overdue survey of the (1983), for instance, made out of feathers, bone dolls, and acrylic on canvas and taffeta, references ritual attire from Hawai‘i while drawing from ornamentation in postcolonial African, Asian, and Oceanic art and religions. Representing how people are often amalgamations of various cultures and identities, in his black-and-white portrait (1971) he covered his face with markings derived from communities in the Pacific.
