When Pierer Mobility AG acquired GasGas in September of 2019, we in the motomedia were shocked. We had heard some rumours but nothing in concrete. We had so many questions like what would happen to the brand? Would it suffer the same fate as the legendary Husaberg brand? How would it fit into the orange family? Would it just be a rebadged KTM or something different?
As the deal came to light, we learnt that Pierer had pretty much just purchased the name and not the intellectual property. It meant the GasGas technology could be rebadged and served up again, and it has been in the name of Rieju. When we learnt that Pierer wasn’t interested in the technology, we thought the new Gasser would be a KTM with red plastics. To our surprise, Pierer and his team of engineers leant on design ideas from both Husqvarna and KTM to create a rebranded GASGAS (in upper case now) that’s unique.
