HOW much should a good horse cost? Answers involving pieces of string abound, but for those requiring a more precise indication, it can be hard to drill down into what constitutes a fair price.
The general consensus, and one now backed up by data, is that horse prices spiked during the height of the Covid pandemic and have remained elevated since. Facebook is filled with threads bursting with disgruntled sellers struggling to attract genuine buyers and frustrated horse-hunters whose budgets seemingly always fall short. So what gives? Are sellers asking the earth, or are buyers simply unrealistic or naive when it comes to the cost of decent horsepower?
It’s important to understand what goes into breeding and producing a horse advertised for sale, says Anna Ross, who runs Elite Dressage, a sales, breeding and training centre in Devon.
“A lot of people don’t do it to make money, but most
