CANARIES
CANARIES are among my favourite birds. I suppose I am unusual in preferring to keep canaries in an aviary rather than in cages. It enables me to watch their activities and hear them singing in a garden setting, along with wild birds, rather in a birdroom, which always reminds me of a noisy classroom.
I know canary breeders will be grinding their teeth at that, because a group of canaries in an aviary are unsupervised. Instead of thoughtfully arranged pairings, aviary birds chose their mates. But they display their physical qualities much better than when housed in a cage. Although I have kept a number of varieties, I like new colour canaries and I'm also fond of the Lizard, Yorkshire and harlequins.
Once I persuaded a zoo-owner boss to allow me to house a variety of canaries in a group to hand for when the questioning got tricky.
