It would seem that the bass fishing here in Essex has been pretty good the last few years. Certainly, most of it has been as good as I have ever seen. Interestingly, talking to some retired and long-standing skippers, they say it’s as good as it has ever been! Whether this is due to the restrictions on commercial landings, climate change or maybe a bit of both, I am not sure. Our bass season is definitely longer than it used to be and I hear reports of some areas in southern UK waters where numbers of bass have declined, as well as areas well to the north where numbers have increased. Perhaps the stock has just moved further north as with other species?
Whatever the reason behind it, there seem to be plenty of bass to be caught around the Essex coast throughout the year.
