In the early days of the automobile, self-motivated transport was a toy for the well-heeled. Myriad start-ups came and went through the first decade of the 20th century, most of which aimed at an upper-crust clientele thanks to their cost. Many participated, and their engineering differed wildly — Electric power? Gasoline? Steam? — until gasoline became the choice fuel for a century or more.
