I have a friend who leases a farm to run a small pheasant shoot. Because the woodland there is benefiting from some grant money designed to help the woods regenerate, my friend is obliged to undertake control measures on animals that are likely to be destructive to that goal. Deer are public enemy number one in that respect, while grey squirrels are not far behind, so my services are welcome to my friend, the farmer who owns the land and the forestry folks who offer the grants. For me, I just feel that it’s nice to be needed and useful.

On average, I’ll shoot around 125 squirrels a year there, with the majority of them being taken during the cold winter months simply because the leaves are off the trees and I can see what’s going on.
