By New Year’s Eve, waking to the sound of heavy rain clattering down on my roof had become very much the norm. It had rained almost non-stop in Galloway since Boxing Day. Consequently, the region was experiencing widespread flooding, including the River Nith bursting its banks, inundating many businesses and homes. Although I was lucky that the severe weather had not affected me, I was becoming impatient with its ability to scupper my plans.
Checking the forecast revealed a relatively dry day ahead, which was in complete contrast to the heavy rain still falling outside. Keen to make the most of the last day of 2022, I decided to go deerstalking close to home, hoping to put some venison in the larder to bring in the new year.
