The English Garden

The Future’s BRIGHT

York Gate, nestled in the leafy suburb of Adel, just north of the city of Leeds, is frequently cited as one of the best of its kind in the pantheon of smaller UK gardens. While rightly feted for its lush plantings set amid an intricate architectural design, it takes on a completely different perspective in late winter when early bulbs come to the fore.

The garden was lovingly designed and crafted by the Spencer family between 1951 and 1994 in the Arts & Crafts style. Vistas and views around the Gothic-style Victorian house are crisply defined by topiary, beech and yew hedging, granite cobble and gravel paths, all decorated with period architectural features. Now Grade II-listed, the garden was started by Frederick and Sybil Spencer and artfully embellished by their son, Robin, both men predeceasing Sybil.

It showcases a wealth of design and planting ideas
