The three surviving Gordon Bennett Napiers (last seen together in 2013) – ‘The First to Wear the Green,’ raced to Brighton in suitably dramatic fashion, spitting flames and rattling windows. They owe their existence to the exuberant American press baron James Gordon Bennett Jr, publisher of the New York Herald and general bon vivant.
