BRITTANY FERRIES LOOKING TOWARDS THE NEXT 50 YEARS

The Roscoff-based ferry company Brittany Ferries celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. However, it was actually January 1973 when sailings between Roscoff in Brittany and Plymouth began, using the freight ferry Kerisnel carrying a cargo of artichokes and cauliflowers, and a new era in ferry travel began.

The company’s primary aim at that time was to exploit opportunities presented by the UK’s entry into the European Common Market, forerunner to the European Union, in order to export directly to markets in the UK. However, as the company marks its 50th anniversary, it is the UK’s departure from the EU that is causing most issues.
