BUCKING GTO
Q: I have a 1964 GTO with a four-speed and a 389-cu.in. V-8 with Tri-Power and a 3.23:1 rear axle. The engine is basically stock, though I added a Ram Air-spec camshaft with .424-inch lift and an advertised duration of 301/303 degrees, intake/exhaust (advertised) and a centerline of 108 degrees on the intake 112 degrees on the exhaust. Timing is 9 degrees before TDC. I live in Flagstaff, Arizona, at 7,000 feet above sea level and have just enough vacuum (about 12 inches of Hg) for my power brakes.
My problem is that the car bucks hard on deceleration at all speeds, but it is especially noticeable at low speeds. I thought it must be a lean condition, but it should be rich at this elevation, right? Even so, I tried changing the center carb jets from .063 to .065 but it made no difference.
