"I DON’T know how you put that feeling into words,” says Nicola Wilson's groom Ruth Asquith. She might struggle to describe her career highlight watching her boss become European eventing champion and clinch team gold for Britain, on JL Dublin - but there’s a video of her screaming with joy as she realised the title was theirs.
“She had nothing in hand going into the showjumping,” Ruth says. “She was on 20.9 and Piggy [March] was on 23.3, and Nic being the pro she is, didn’t celebrate until she’d looked at the clock. I couldn’t see it but when she punched the air, I thought, ‘Yep. She’s done it. We’ve done it.”
“Dubs” and Ruth had been companions since he arrived at Nicola’s as a four-year-old.
“I was thinking about that last year, with Nic having had her accident, and realised Dubs hadn’t been anywhere without me since he’d been here,” Ruth says. “It’s such a journey from baby five-year-olds, at their first events, then you suddenly look at them
