The attention to detail in Moon Garden is incredible – from the birds wrapping their feet around the geometric background design to the three different owls. Do you think making a collection with such large prints opened yourself up to incorporate even more details than usual?
Oh, definitely! The larger the scale of a print, the more committed I have to be to detail. Every square centimeter must be carefully considered. Large prints show more errors so unresolved details can become awkward to the eye. They are technically much more difficult to design as well. The scale of the repeat is crucial. With tiny detail on a large design, it cannot be shrunk down to fit the printing process without a ton of loss. Large scale prints have to be drawn to scale because there is far less wiggle room to size it up or down. I enjoy the challenges of designing at different scales: each has their very own set of problems to solve.
How did you first decide which animals to include in Moon Garden?
