THE UNIQUE Model L pistol, manufactured by French company Manufacture d’ Armes des Pyrénées Françaises (MAPF) was introduced in the mid-1960s and was apparently an updated version of the various pre-war models made by the company. It’s a simple, reliable and well-made design and, according to one source, saw duty with some regional French police detectives into the 1980s, obviously in calibres bigger than the .22lr.
The Unique small arms factory was formed in 1923 in Béhobie under the name of Uria & Arenas Frères by José Uria (1896-1973) and in 1928 became MAPF when it was set up in Hendaye. It remained a family business until 2001 when the factory was taken over by FMR, a French company. Today
