I'm in the final 5km of the marathon at Ironman Portugal [15 October, 2022]. It's 10.30pm and for the first time since diving into the icy waters of the Atlantic nearly 14 hours ago, I'm starting to get cold. I have chafe in places I never knew it was possible to get chafe, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose a few toenails.
It's been a day full of ups and downs (literally and figuratively), and now I'm on the final downhill into Cascais. The glow of the light in town is peeking above the treeline and I can hear that unmistakable call being repeated over the loudspeaker: “You are an Ironman!” I turn to Simon and say, almost in disbelief, “I think I'm going to finish this.” A surge of adrenaline hits me and I run faster than I have all day, energised by the distant roars of the crowd.
