HELICAL KNITTING is a technique for knitting stripes in the round without the need to carry the yarn that is not being used up along at the back of the work. Each colour is set up as a distinct spiral of stitches, which means that you don’t have any unsightly colour changes (jogs!) in your project.
Helical stripes can be worked in two or more colours. In Issue 125 of The Knitter, (www.gathered.how/knitting-and-crochet/knitting/how-to-knit-helical-stripes/) we explored how to set up and work two-colour helical stripes.
In this article, we look at how to apply this great technique to a plain ‘vanilla’ sock pattern. Helical stripes are great for socks, because not having to carry yarn means there is less risk of rubbing inside the sock. What’s more, the technique is really easy to use with almost any vanilla sock pattern, and it offers a perfect stashbuster idea!
