The Knitter

Meet Gordon Reid

GORDON REID has a passion for ganseys which borders on obsession; he has been knitting ganseys for nearly forty years, discovering patterns in old books and local archives, and he shares his experiences with knitters around the world through his entertaining blog, Gansey Nation. Based in Wick in north-east Scotland, Gordon and his wife Margaret love to recreate the traditional patterns of Caithness; one of which, ‘Wick Leaf’, is the star of this special supplement.

When did you develop your passion for gansey knitting?

“Margaret, my wife, is American, and she taught me to knit when I spent some time on Cape Cod, full of photos of traditional ganseys, and the first page I opened it at I fell in love. I bonded like a duckling with its mother and never looked back.”
