It is no real surprise that Rachmaninov followed in the footsteps of Chopin in writing 24 Preludes for piano. Chopin was a huge inspiration, and Rachmaninov’s early piano works are very much a homage to the great Polish composer. Unlike Chopin, though, Rachmaninov did not compose his Preludes in a specific order or key sequence. Indeed, they are written over three opus numbers (if you include the C sharp minor Prelude from Op 3).
