IN THE CAUCASUS, the mountains that span Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, a new 1500km hiking trail is in development. When I saw an advert seeking hikers to test out this brand new route, within 24 hours I went from not being able to pinpoint Armenia on a map to enrolling and attending my first video training session. A few months later I was setting off alone to walk for four weeks across the country, feeling like a real explorer. With much of the world mapped and popular hiking trails like the Camino de Santiago seeing a footfall of some 350,000 trekkers per year, how often do you get the opportunity to try something completely new?
