GROUPTEST WINTER WARMERS

There’s no doubt that extra motivation is required to keep riding through the British winter, when it’s more than likely cold, damp and muddy, and the technical challenge of muddy ruts and sniper roots increases, as does the length of the post-ride clean-up. It’s worth making the effort, though, to keep up fitness, improve your skills and have a great time outside on your bike with pals. All you need is some decent riding gear to protect you from the elements, and that’s where a warm winter jacket or midlayer comes in. Pick the right one, and the thought of braving the elements becomes a much more appealing prospect.

The jacket that meets your needs will depend on your type/pace of riding and how much heat you generate, the weather conditions you plan to ride in, whether its cut fits your body shape and how much you’re willing to spend. Brands design their jackets with all these requirements in mind, to offer breathability – so sweat is wicked away instead of cooling on your skin – insulation for warmth, windproofing, water resistance and a tailored fit. However, they’ll prioritise certain attributes over others, because of the inevitable trade-off – for example, more windproofing generally means less breathability.
