The Duke of Sussex’s candid memoir Spare shot to the top of the bestseller lists as he gave a string of interviews to publicise it last week, revealing intimate details of his life and confirming just how estranged his relationship with his father the King and his brother the Prince of Wales has become.

It sold more than 1.4 million English-language copies on the first day it went on sale, and with 400,000 snapped up within 24 hours in the UK, it became the country’s fastest-selling non-fiction book ever.

Printed in 16 different languages worldwide, it has gone back to press in the US to meet demand.

But the autobiography also sparked criticism of the Duke for lifting the lid on deeply private conversations with family members, casting several in an unflattering light and accusing some of leaking and planting damaging stories about him and his wife Meghan.
