The juxtaposition between old and new is an aesthetic that architect William Smart loves to explore and, engaged to work on this Arts and Crafts-era home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, he was afforded just such an opportunity.

The owners, Nita Pai and Nav Gupta, and their 12-year-old and nine-year old children, had lived in the house for a few years, transforming it just enough from its then two-apartment configuration to function as a family home.
