The AACA Eastern Fall Meet in Pennsylvania, better known as Hershey, has long been a multi-faceted event that swallows what is otherwise Hershey Park’s vast parking lot. Most know of the miles-long swap meet and car corral that can quickly consume two or three days of time to take in. And then there’s the one-day only car show that draws — on average — well over 1,000 vintage cars, trucks, race cars, and motorcycles. If that were not enough for casual and veteran enthusiasts, there’s also a collector car auction that has been hosted by RM Sotheby’s for 16 years.
Aptly billed as The Hershey Auction, it’s been held every year since its inception at the Hershey Lodge. Dates for the 2022 sale were the evenings of October 5-6, preceded by an opening barbeque-style preview dinner. Bolstered by 86 automobilia lots, the auction was brimming with 129 vehicular lots. Let’s put this sale into some context: An overwhelming 59 percent of the cars scheduled to cross the block originated from the prewar era. A further 38 percent dated from 1949-’69. Just five were built in the 1970s. Seeing anything newer here, like the 1987 Buick Grand National GNX on the docket, has been nigh unheard of.
