Republican ‘fears for the future’ if Trump not charged
The Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger said he believed the Department of Justice would “do the right thing” and bring criminal charges against Donald Trump for his role in the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.
“I think he will be charged, and I frankly think he should be,” Kinzinger told CNN’s State of Union last Sunday.
The House select committee investigating the attack, on which Kinzinger sits, voted last month to refer the former president to the justice department on charges of obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to make a false statement and “incite”, “assist” or “aid or comfort” an insurrection.
The recommendations relate to the former president’s role in encouraging the insurrection in Washington DC as thousands of his supporters sought to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
Separately, six years’ worth of Trump’s tax returns dating to 2015 were released last week, in which it was revealed that he had a bank account in China and failed to donate charitably in 2020.
