n the summer of 1941, the U.S. Army announced it was looking for a more potent anti-tank gun platform to replace its M6 gun carriage then being produced by Dodge. It was effectively a 3/4-ton truck designated the WC-55, and while just fine in regular testing, it showed some shortfalls in actual use. Specifications included that the new gun carriage be a six-wheel 4x4 with power to the dual rear axles and be able to carry up to six soldiers with a 37mm gun attached.
