That’s not an unfair assessment.
Even dating back to his high school days in Seattle, Carroll was known for his speed. “He can wreak havoc with his plus speed and advanced feel for running the bases,” we wrote in his scouting report for the 2019 draft.
With 52 stolen bases in 142 career minor league games, Carroll has never missed a chance to show off his wheels. The same was true when the D-backs called him up on Aug. 29.
Carroll turned in the fastest average sprint speed, according to MLB Statcast, and an average home-to-first run time of 4.05 seconds that ranked second in the majors.
Factor in Carroll’s incredible hitting upside and he is poised to reach superstardom—fast.
Ranking the NL West farm systems after the 2022 season
Los Angeles Dodgers
No. 2 system
The Dodgers possess tremendous star power and remarkable depth on the farm. Diego Cartaya appears next in the franchise’s long line of catching greats, while Miguel Vargas, Bobby Miller and Gavin Stone stand poised to contribute in 2023. Even the lower levels of the system are overstocked with impact potential.

Arizona Diamondbacks
No. 4 system
The D-backs got arguably the top player in each of the 2021 and 2022 drafts despite not picking first overall either year. Arizona nabbed Jordan Lawlar and then Druw Jones and teamed them with top prospect Corbin Carroll. The D-backs pair arguably the top position prospect trio in the game with solid pitching depth.

Colorado Rockies
No. 10 system
Breakouts from Ezequiel Tovar, Drew Romo and Adael Amador catapulted the Rockies’ system into the top 10. That trio joined 2020 first-rounder Zac Veen among the premier prospects in the game. With strong international classes in recent years and the addition of five of the top 100 picks in the 2022 draft, Colorado is trending up.

San Francisco Giants
No. 18 system
Top prospects Marco Luciano and Kyle Harrison finished the season strong in Double-A and have high upsides. And for every preseason Giants prospect who stumbled, e.g. Luis Matos, Heliot Ramos or Will Bednar, an emergent prospect such as Casey Schmitt, Vaun Brown or Mason Black rose to take his place.

San Diego Padres
No. 23 system
The Padres nearly gutted their farm system to acquire Juan Soto from the Nationals. But the replenishing of prospect talent is well underway in San Diego with the likes of 2021 first-rounder Jackson Merrill, 2022 picks Dylan Lesko and Robby
