Keeping it Real

Road-legal cars have always played an essential role in the development of VW drag racing, going as far back as the DKP Drag Days hosted by Der Kleiner Panzers car club at Carlsbad Raceway in the 1960s. Later generations of DKP brought similar events back from 1998 until 2000, attracting up to 170 street and race cars to the same Californian racetrack.

Those events inspired several European enthusiasts to follow in their footsteps. Germany’s DAS Drag Days, instigated by Der Autobahn Scrapers from Belgium, comes to mind. The UK also had its own Cal Look Drags run at the dearly missed Shakespeare County Raceway, or Avon Park as it is still known to many.

Back in California, several classes have been created specifically for street-legal VWs, including Unlimited Street earlier in this century. To qualify, vehicles need to be driven on public roads before each race, so must comply
