WHEN people consider the wines of McLaren Vale’s Scarpantoni Estate, it’s most likely they’d be thinking shiraz or cabernet sauvignon.
These were the varieties planted by patriarch Domenico Scarpantoni after his arrival in Australia in 1952. After working for Thomas Hardy at its Tintara winery, and then as vineyard manager for Seaview Wines, he purchased his first 20ha block in McLaren Vale in 1958. In 1968 he bought a second 20ha block in McLaren Flat on the site of one of the first schools in South Australia (hence it
