It’s Stage 15 of the 1998 Tour de France. The oppressive July heat has faded overnight and by morning the hairpin bends of Les Deux Alpes are consumed by thick fog and lashing rain. The apocalyptic weather that greets the 189km mountain stage from Grenoble to Les Deux Alpes seems to symbolise a race in crisis. Doped-up riders have been taken into custody. Teams have been thrown out of the race. Riders are staging protests, and fans are in despair.
