UPDATE ON EBUTE METTA

Ebute Metta’, featured in Issue 129 of Locomotives International, prompts me to put pen to paper, to update readers on proposals for development at Ebute Metta and elsewhere in Nigeria.

In May 1998, the Nigerian Railway Corporation authorised the development of a railway museum centred on four historic buildings and a range of locomotives and rolling stock within the railway compound at Ebute Metta.

The former Colonial General Manager’s house is a two-storey colonial mansion built on a large expanse of landscaped land in 1898. LEGACY – the volunteer-led charitable partnership organisation charged with developing the site – has created a museum facility which is self-funding, additionally relying on income generated through non-core activities such as venue hire and the staging of events, as well as occasional location filming – Nigeria hosts the world’s third-largest movie industry, ‘Nollywood’.
