At what point do I WORK THROUGH AN INJURY VERSUS TAKE TIME OFF? I can’t afford to go to the doctor for every ache and pain, but I’m in my 40s and don’t want to seriously injure myself.

But as contributing writer Andrew Heffernan, C.S.C.S., describes on page 11, “All those reps of power cleans, pullups, and burpees left him battling constant soreness in his shoulders, hips, and ‘places I’d never dealt with in the past.’ ” Filly is now building a massive fitness following for what we call his “kinder, gentler” approach to CrossFit-style training, which prioritizes recovery and moderation, and there are lessons for all of us in how he listened to his body (and his mind) before hitting his reset button.
