If urban settings are planned in a way to address children s needs, they will support not only childrens development but thrive as homes for future generations. Without proper planning for children, urban settings become dysfunctional and fragmented built environments.
It is on the basis of this thought that since 1996, Unicef has launched the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, a project that supports municipal governments in realizing the rights of children at the local level using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as its foundation.
