LIGHTS, CAMERA, QUEER!

2022 was one of the most diverse years for LGBTQ+ stories in film. Woo! With Fire Island, Joel Kim Booster explored the intersection of LGBTQ+ and Asian-American identities while glorifying LGBTQ+ culture like no other film before, Billy Eichner critiqued masc4masc culture in the historic rom-com Bros and Maya Hawke schemed as a wicked queer teen in Do Revenge. The latter also marked Sarah Michelle Gellar’s film comeback - a moment of vital importance for our culture. This year, however, looks insane for LGBTQ+ visibility across all genres: two unpopular queer teens start a fight club to have sex with cheerleaders; Rina Sawayama embraces her inner sword-wielder in the fourth John Wick blockbuster; and a married gay couple are taken hostage by an apocalyptophobic madman. 2023 has… everything?! Barbie

Although the live-action adaptation of Barbie doesn’t appear to have any queer elements, it’s Barbie. That! Is! Camp! The upcoming rom-com will follow the title character (Margot Robbie) after she’s expelled from Barbieland “for being a less than perfect-looking doll” and her adventure into the human world to try and find “true happiness”.
