2022 was one of the most diverse years for LGBTQ+ stories in film. Woo! With Fire Island, Joel Kim Booster explored the intersection of LGBTQ+ and Asian-American identities while glorifying LGBTQ+ culture like no other film before, Billy Eichner critiqued masc4masc culture in the historic rom-com Bros and Maya Hawke schemed as a wicked queer teen in Do Revenge. The latter also marked Sarah Michelle Gellar’s film comeback - a moment of vital importance for our culture. This year, however, looks insane for LGBTQ+ visibility across all genres: two unpopular queer teens start a fight club to have sex with cheerleaders; Rina Sawayama embraces her inner sword-wielder in the fourth John Wick blockbuster; and a married gay couple are taken hostage by an apocalyptophobic madman. 2023 has… everything?! Read ahead for all of our most anticipated films of the year.
Barbie
Although the live-action adaptation of Barbie doesn’t appear to have any queer elements, it’s Barbie. That! Is! Camp! The upcoming rom-com will follow the title character (Margot Robbie) after she’s expelled from Barbieland “for being a less than perfect-looking doll” and her adventure into the human world to try and find “true happiness”. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman,
