If you give a boy a challenge, nine times out of ten he will rise to it. But too many of us in America are coddling our children instead of challenging them. With the most humane intentions we are rearing a new breed that is already being called “the soft generation.” And despite warnings from several quarters, our citizenry — with few exceptions — sits on its hands.
