Vertumnus

From grapes and pears to onions and olives, Giuseppe Arcimboldo's colourful depiction of Vertumnus, the Etruscan god of the seasons, is a veritable feast for the eyes. What makes it even more remarkable, though, is that the artist brought together the vast selection of fruits, flowers and vegetables to create a portrait of one of the most powerful and influential men of the 16th century: Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II.
