HOW WAS IT FOR YOU?
Irise out of the saddle, bike swaying from side to side as I squeeze everything out of my legs to ascend infamous Snow Canyon, the punchiest climb of the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. Pushing so hard 45 miles into the bike leg isn’t particularly wise, but I know I’ve got a nine-mile descent coming up. The chimp in me advises easing up, but the stunning scenery of red rock against a clear blue sky helps silence the inner voice saying, ‘You’re going too hard’. ‘Come on, James, throw caution to the wind. Let’s go.’
Roll back just three weeks and you’ll find me on the Queen K Highway in Kona, 21-miles deep into my first Ironman World Championship, not giving much thought to the 70.3 World Champs. But as I cross the finish line in Kailua-Kona in 9:26hrs, completely spent, the dread of having to do it again - albeit over half the distance - lands hard.
